Spent 250K+ And Denied Centurion
An interesting thread has appeared on Flyertalk.com. A member of that board met the 1 year and 250K spend requirement, called and asked to apply for the Centurion, but was ultimately denied because of his credit rating. He speculated it is likely caused by large amounts of debt carried on other cards.
This is the first time I have heard of a case where someone who met many of the requirements, has too low of a credit rating to qualify for the card. It would seem to me, in this instance, the $5,000 initiation fee, and $2500 yearly fee could be better spent elsewhere, like paying down debt on other cards.
As I reported back in May, Amex is becoming much tighter in their exposure to debt.

Have to agree and that this person shouldn’t really be trusted with any sort of credit facility if they think carrying debt is a good thing.
I bet the credit controllers had a good laugh at this person’s expense (no pun intended)
If you have that kind of money in your account, head to the websites of your credit card issuers and get busy with your debit card and then reapply for Centurion if you really want to.

Over the last year I’ve spent £160000 on my UK Platinum card, asked for Centurion a couple of weeks ago and received a letter today telling me that “We are not currently extending the invitation to any new Cardmembers and have no plans to increase the membership base in the immediate future”
