I have been a Centurion holder since October 1999 at inception and you had to be invited. A couple of years later they asked us to test market the business Centurion… for free the first year. The benefis are good but they keep losing some of them like TWA program in flying (I know TWA is gone) and the Hyatt Diamond level hotel program as a couple of examples. Then they have USAir as a program member but you can no longer transfer points to USAir program. They just announced effective 11/15/08 that they are discontinuing the travel companion program. Ironically, I hold a personal and business card but the main focus of their marketing is almost completely geared to the business side. The personal side lacks teeth compared to business. If you travel and know how to use the benefits you can recoup the money in 3 months you pay for this. The card is titanium and t was changed about 2 years ago from the plastic. I have seen plenty around lately but still rare. We collectivel spend about $3M a year but when we we invited to get this card it was around $400K a year. It seemed like they wanted people to have good paying record and that used the benefits alot when originally chosen.
The customer service at AMEX Centurion is te elite of their personnel. But mostly during normal business hours. After hous people seem to be in the Platinum card servicing areas. The Travel group is definitely typical average AMEX service agents and needs to eb double checked whenever used since they make mistakes…. often.
The B of A card mentioned elsewhere in this blog only has about 20% of the benefits of the Black card. They charge $295 unless you are a good BofA client and they can waive it. Most of the comments on this site are accurate and some are plainly guesses. Being a heavy user we know where their pitfalls are. These are mostly in having the good benefits which as mentioned earlier are waning.
One last thing, when I received the cards we were told we were the founding members and our rates would bever change. AMEX of course did not keep their word after 2003 and started a steady rise in rates for the card. While we do not pay initiation since we were already members they have take the primary card cost from $1K annually to $3K now. If the benefits keep reducing pretty soon it will not be worthwhile anymore.

I’ve got a question about the Centurion. Is the domestic companion ticket still part of the benefits? I’ve heard mixed messages. Or is that still on the Centurion but eliminated on the Platinum.
Thanks.
