How to Maximize Rewards Points

Maximizing Membership Rewards points on your Amex is truley an art.  There are many people who use complicated transfering processes to maximize their point value instead of redeeming their points directly through American Express.  Typically speaking, transferring your points directly to your primary hotel/air carrier can usually be more beneficial, than redeeming through American Express.  I am going to be writing an indepth post on how to maximize reward points, but I wanted to offer up the chance for you all to contribute.  How do you maximize your reward points?  Which programs to you transfer them to and why?

I usually transfer them to my starwood account

We’ll I used to not get the credit onto my statments. thats just wasting points. what i did was get gift cards to a store and sold them online. Then used that cash to pay my bills. U get more that way

Im getting centurion next week. If you wanna check u guys can check this months beautiful statement to finally hit the 250k mark! http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/2418/amexhr2.png

The statement don’t mean anything. I could choose a two-year period and have half a million worth of spending look like it was spent in one month :) But happy for you to finally have reached the mark. I did so myself a while ago but still haven’t gotten the Centurion. It is really expensive…

if you get a black next week, aren’t you a little worried about the financial future of Amex. i wouldn’t mind if they went under and i lost 600 bucks or so for me and my wife’s platinum cards, but losing 4k or so would be a little hard to swallow (forget the 5k initiation), manageable yes, but still money is money.

i will only use points for international first class or business class awards.

transferring points to hotels is a bad idea because of the rate you get.

Amex looks to be on the ropes as I just read they have requested 2.5 billion in government funding

Not worried; if your a black card holder, do you think $7500 is a lot? Psh no way. chump change + ill make it back with all the perks ;) i know how to make money off the card

congratz to you all who are just getting your black cars! wish i had one for the travel perks, though i doubt il ever make enough to qualify!

Though I’m just an Amex credit card customer (who always pays his account promptly) I really do hope that Amex don’t merge with one of the big banks as the service I have received from Amex has always been exceptional and far better than any of the Mastercard or Visa issuers.

Though the interest rate is quite high compared to my other cards I’d like to keep it because Amex are a respected financial institution and the service is top class.

Yeah Mitch, not to go off the original topic (too late), but I agree with you. I have always enjoyed the prompt, to-the-point and top-notch service I have gotten from AMEX. Even though I think the service was even better years ago, it still is above any average, bank-issued MasterCard or Visa card services… but so is AMEX in general.
