Platinum Card
If you’re not quite ready for the Centurion card or don’t want to pay the hefty initiation/annual fee, then American Express Platinum card is a good choice. Amex offers both a business and personal version of this card. The Platinum card offers many of the same travel benefits (companion tickets, hotel upgrades, airline lounge access, rental car upgrades) and access to a personal concierge, with out the stringent requirements and fees of a black card. Here is additional information on the personal and business platinum cards.

I’ve had the personal platinum card for the last several months and have already gotten my money back from the $450 annual fee, I can’t say enough about it, especially the concierge service.

I have the Gold Amex, but the MasterCard Platinum. So far, I dont see any reason to go Higher on the Amex. I get a lot of service from Gold level, and MasterCard is better in Platinum than Amex. Jim is right though, Its a great card.
I love the Platinum care although something that is not noted in the airport lounge access is the fact that you have to be flying one of those airlines to have access to it. For example if you are flying another airlines that day and would like to go into the clubs you can not do that.
Hopefully the Platinum Service stays at the quality level it has been as long as I’ve known it. I know it’s been top notch. However, as of today, they decided to get rid of (aka lay off) a good percentage of concierges and people who were working within that area of the business. I feel terrible for all those people. Apparently card members aren’t spending what they used to spend. They’ve become far too conservative while holding onto the quiet allure of a platinum card. They also aren’t using their benefits in the same way. It’s quite sad. America, if you can afford it…stimulate the goddamn economy is what I say. Perhaps I’m too capitalist in my ideas.
how much do I have to spend on my gold charge card to be upgraded to the platinum card if I would like to do it that way?
many thanks
Unless something’s changed since late last year, the “Up to 4 complementary companion airfare tickets a year” benefit has been discontinued. I really enjoyed this benefit, and hope it comes back.
Just been upgraded to the platinum card for like 3 months.
It’s realy great. the service is very good and for me the best card on the market right now.
Jan
There is no longer the four domestic 2 for 1. However, the International Airline Program 2 for 1 is unlimited throught the year.
Telekom Malaysia does not accept my Amex Card for payment of bills. Lake Club also turned down my card. So did one or two restaurants, Chinese as well as Japanese. Please look into the matter.
i have 2 platinum black visa.. and i love it.
many service is good but in local bank in my country not longer the credit limit…..
Hi..
I declared bankruptcy many years ago and AMEX was one of the creditors I burned. I am a high net worth individual now and would love to get an AMEX card again. I have heard that once you declare bankruptcy on them they will never let you back. I would be willing to pay them the money I defaulted on if they would accept me again as a cardholder.
Any feedback??
I have a World Elite Mastercard and it comes with the free Priority Pass airport lounge card as well. I also have a Visa Signature card which I also like. Both have no annual fee also. Neither were hard to get as I have a 800+ credit score.
My dad got put me on his Platinum card when I was still in high school. Now that I have my own and am paying $450 a year when I hardly ever travel, I appreciate my daddy even more.
Good card, very expensive, features are someone what limited for most people. Though it does look nice coming out of my Prada wallet at the Galleria.
I have an AMEX platrinum card..How do I reach concierge services and where can I get a detailed list of all special services?
I have been a loyal American Express cardholder for years. I have the Platinum Charge, the Delta Reserve and the Starwood Preferred Guest cards. My average spending on my Platinum Charge is roughly 6k per month. I pay all my bills on time, and I have never had a late payment w/ American Express or any card for that matter. How am I rewarded? I find out last night that my credit limit was randomly cut $200.00 on my Delta Reserve Card. I will say it again: I have never missed ANY payments. Why on earth would anyone want to be an American Express cardholder for this kind of treatment.
I spend roughly 1k per year just to have American Express cards (with additional cardholders). Why would I continue to pay Amex 1k a year just to use their cards, and be rewarded with credit limit cuts? I can get a 25k credit line at Bank of America for free. It’s just not worth it any longer.
The Platinum Card has a few benefits but isn’t really worth it. I suppose the only frill that you use if you travel is the airport club access–which isn’t that great when it comes to flying on US-owned airlines, but regardless I’ll take it. Membership Reward points are a joke and the concierge service is nothing at all. Even when you have a Centurion Card it’s just the same thing, they just answer the phone differently.
After this month, I am cutting my three AMEX cards up, and ending a relationship with them that dates to 1982.
I’m thinking about applying for a platinum card, can anyone elaborate on what it takes to get one? Do you need a gold card first?
My credit score is low (under 700)because I do not have any credit cards or debt, only a mortgage no lates. My income is under $300
no Moneymonk you dont need to have the gold card first, go to http://www.americanexpress.com/platinum and apply directly you can get an answer in 60 seconds.
Ive been a member for a year, its great! I really enjoy free booze and the airport lounges!
There is no reason to get the Platinum Card. AMEX will charge you for the privilege of having the card and treat you like trash if you ever use it. They are imposing credit line reductions and limits on everyone lately–that’s what you get for being loyal to them.
The only remote benefit if you travel is airline club access. However, most airline lounges in America are dismal. You get sick and tired of cheese sticks and small drinks sooner or later. Unfortunately, no American-operated airline runs anything close to a luxurious lounge.
I have used my platimum card for all travel and the service was excellent. Helped me while I was traveling the European nations. Loved hanging out in the airline lounge. Nice and quite for much needed rest. I do not see any Visa or Mastercard that can compare
Also all I did was tell customer service what I wanted to do and the rest was taken care of. Quite friendly service I must say
I have had an American Express “green” card for many years now and I have no complaints about the service so far. They have for the past two or so years been trying to get me to upgrade to a Platinum card. I have delayed it for a long time but finally this month I took the plunge and accepted their offer I should be receiving my new card next week. My parents have had the Centurion card for many years, can anyone tell me if the services are comparable to centurion?
Is there a welcome package like there is with the centurion?
Isn’t that special at all, have a platinum for years now (when it was also on invitation only) and they invite me for the centurion recently but don’t signup for it cause I travel a lot between the States and Europe but it doesn’t get accepted in a lot of stores overseas and still need to use visa or mastercard which I don’t pay any annual fee for those. Hilarious in my eyes. And the concierge service isn’t better than in the hotels where I stay often who got me courtside tickets for the Lakers while Amex couldn’t arrange it.
I’ve had the Platuinum Card for about 5 years, and I have watched them flounder over the past 2 years with the recession. I have ok credit rating at 739 and make over 100k a year. I was away on business and used my Amex card and was denied. The limit on my Platinum (which I didn’t think existed)was reduced to 5k. I only use this card for travel. My Amex card was used to purchase my first class ticket and suite room at the hotel for the entire week. The company I work for pays that bill in full. As I tried to pick up the dinner bill my card was denied. This WAS very embarrasing. When I called Amex that night they told me I exceeded their credit limit. I was stunned when they told me that they reduced the limit to 5k, nor would they extend it. I pay as I go with this card so I never have a CC balance. The card is great for travel, but now question why I have to pay $450 a year for a 5k balance on a very exclusive card. My wife has told me to get rid of it, but I’m optimistic that they will increase my limit back to what it was. I have under 10k of CC debt. Not sure of their logic, but am willing to stick with them for now. For rewards, don’t bother with this card, go with the Chase Saphire….much better.
Can someone tell me the benefits of using Amex Platinum concierge vs. Visa Black Card concierge? Which one is better at getting hard-to-find tickets in town?
Platinum Amex needs to update it’s airport lounge access to include Continental’s “Star Alliance” partners instead of “Sky Team”. I’ll change next year to a more lounge friendly card if this isn’t done.
Well not only has Amex lowered credit limits on their invitation only Plat cards over the pst year, but NOW today i get a very special letter …with NEW changes…. new added perks ,…..yet no decrease in fees of course, but 20% off rewards airline purchases, a $200.00 per year credit for baggage fees, or flight exchange fees, AND lastly a app for your phone for airline information WWWWoohoo !And THEN I am informed that the big one Continental Air is leaving the Amex rewards program, and taking the Pres. Club access away for Continental as well
Unbelievable! The card has become little more than scraping your windshield in the winter. I got better reservations @ arestaurant than they did after weeks of them saying they were trying. They are doomed. And a disgrace. They really must have ticked off Continentalin some way. Maybe they were charging them a high merchant fee or lowering their no pre set spending limits.
Excellent benefits and ease of use! Had the Business Platinum and Personal since 2004! Wish all merchants would accept Amex but for those who don’t there is still time…
I think the old phrase, “Don’t Leave Home Without It!” is quite appropriate for any occasion!
Hi,
Going off the subject…..Im from the UK, I am a cardholder of the BROWN Harrods American Express Card. Has anyone heard about it before? It looks like the Standard gold, plat and cent cards
If you would like info on it or pics just let me know.
False reporting above for Amex to write Amex Platinum is treated as Starwood Preferred Guest Gold. I have never been able to get any Starwood Gold benefits when using my Costco Amex Platinum card at Sheraton Hotels Waikiki, Maui and Frankfurt. Sheraton just stares at Amex Platinum and shrugs. Further, in my opinion, anyone can get the Costco Amex Platinum card, so why would anyone pay for a platinum card directly from Amex?
I do a lot of traveling and the annual fee is already paid over by all the times I’ve been in the Delta Sky Lounge getting free wi-fi, alcohol, drinks, cookies and snacks. I also used the $200 worth of baggage fees and big savings at certain hotels such as Mandarin Oriental. People also tend to notice people with Amex Platinum cards, so that could be a bonus or detriment depending on how you view that.
All in all, a great card.
I have had the Business platinum card for 6 years and I have spent over $500,000 on the card in the last 12 months. I want a black card but when I call they say, sorry we are not inviting members to the centurion card right now” … anyone know what is up? I want this card.
The reason Continental left the program is because of the United Airlines merger and United is not currently involved with Amex. They are putting together both freq Flyer programs from the period of Sept 30, 2011 to December 31, 2011 and will release a new unified program on Jan 1, 2011. Whether the new United/Continental re-joins at that time is debatable. They also lost Southwest last year, although I think Southwest did that to continue their strange self-imposed exile from the rest of the world - they are very introverted anyways.
The reason that a lot of credit cards dropped limits from June 2009 to December 2010 is Obama’s credit card law went into effect and caused banks to actually back each dollar of reserve with deposits, so if you had a $50K line and typically used $5K a month, they would often drop the line to 1.5X the average usage. Since most people don’t charge the full amount on their cards every month, many people got hit hard, especially small businesses. I personally lost over $300K in spending capability including dropping a card from $52K to $1K and $40K to $0 (cancelled) from the same bank (Bank of America). Amex, Chase and others got on the bandwagon after BoA was through and I had my credit score go from 815 to 659 in 10 days all through no fault of my own (killed my mortgage refi at the time). If government would get out of the banking business (and all others), we’d be much better off…my credit score is back over 700 for the first time in almost 2 years just because of this crapola.
Be very careful with your Amex Platinum points. I had the Platinum card for over 10 years. I accumulated over 200,000 Amex points which I used from time to time. Then, without warning, and after spending nearly $253,000 per year on the card with timely payments, they canceled my card. I’ve seen them do this twice in the past 24 years–during recessions–as they trim back on exposure. Except this time, they KEPT my points and referred to a little-known T&C in their terms that says you forfeit all points in the event of a cancellation.
Three months later, their crisis was over, and they offered me a new card sans points.
NEVER leave your points in your Amex account. They switch management routinely and change their policies at a whim. Best to move your points to your Airline or other favorite spot immediately.
Do not recommend American Express (AMEX) to any person you’d consider a friend. AMEX has an extreme, inconsiderate, and ‘a Holier than Thou’ attitude. I am so dismayed and disappointed with AMEX regarding their customer service, I must share my complaint.
I have (had) the platinum card. Annual fee is in excess of $450 each year. I have been member of AMEX since 1994.
I submitted a $10,000 payment on line. Several days later while looking at my bank statement, I noticed the $10,000 payment had not processed. I went back on line and re-submitted the $10,000. This time the payment went through without a problem. All was fine, until I received an email stating that my AMEX account was cancelled! WTF…why! I contacted AMEX customer service rep, and was informed the payment of $10,000 was attempted three times, all unsuccessful; thus justifies policy cancellation.
I found out that AMEX processed first $10,000 payment even though a payment had already been processed. AMEX, the greedy bastards processed BOTH payments!
Not once did AMEX email, or contact me. If they did, there were no messages mentioning any issue to my account. My attempts to explain, and resolve the problem fell on deaf ears. AMEX doesn’t care about individuals, only easy money. We pay $450 for good customer service and benefits. What do we get…no benefits! …nothing but rude, inconsiderate bastards that could care less.
Now my excellent rating will be compromised. I have always maintained outstanding credit. This is a personal insult, professional embarrassment and uncalled for. I will speak-out against AMEX and highly recommend to STAY AWAY FROM AMEX!
Bottom line….stay away from AMEX
I have had both the Personal and Business and continue to keep my personal card. That’s all I use! Unless a merchant does not accept Amex, I use my personal card for virtually everything from gas to groceries to car and vacation purchases. The benefits speak for themselves. I have nothing but positive feedback on my experience with Amex Platinum!

I’ve had the platinum business card for about 16 months, and love it. The concierge is great for helping make reservations at restaurants for client meetings and for arranging travel.
I travel a lot so the complimentary airport lounge access is great, it helps me get a lot of work done while waiting in airports. Not to mention more comfortable.
