i think that your blog about the card is pretty much amazing…
i am soon to be a cardholder and can’t wait to let you know if it is actually like you say it is.
I had a customer pay with a black Amex card years ago in a restaurant in Toronto. It would have been late 1985 or early 1986. It was made of plastic…definitely not titanium (at that time, anyway).
None of us had ever seen one before…but we knew it was “special” as we had all heard rumors about the “invitation only” card. Although we had a lot of celebs at the place, no one recognized him. Maybe he was just some rich guy…lol.
I have to admit…at the time it certainly seemed exclusive and impressive! Mind you, the tip must of been “standard”…otherwise I’d have remembered that TOO! LOLOL
i work at a ski resort, and indeed, they are common here! its funny to see how Black card holders react to inquires about their unusual card by employees who have never seen or heard of them before.
“oh! thats a cool card! its heavy! where did you get that?”
the woman just simply responded, “its metal.” and haughtly walked away.
the customers behind her, however, explained that it was THEE card… the infamed, unlimited American Express Black Card…
the employees face was priceless!!
I just have to say, this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen and that is pretty bad with all the things on the internet. Credit card worship of this magnitude can bring nothing good.
I would like to know the cost of the annual fee as well as the benefit of the black card before I apply.
I have held a BlackCard since inception as a charter member, but recently heard rumour of a Metal Black Card - has anyone heard of this or another rumour starting ??
Yes, Ian, the card that I have is made of a heavy titanium. Perhaps you might call and have yours changed out.
well yes i too hold a titanium centurion card, in fact two of them, the good thing is theres no chip and pin (which really Ps me off) oppose to the plastic. in fact american express informed me that when the card expires it has to be sent back to them to have it destroyed, however it certainly weights down the wallet.
i work at a fairly exclusive hotel and i would see at least 1 black amex per day. i love it when amex black members checkin, because you know they have plenty of cash, so you offer them an upsell to a better room so we can increase revenue. my favorite is when they dont take the upsell, so then you comment on the card - then they start telling you “its exclusive, they dont hand to many out”. but my real favorite is when you reach into your pocket, pull out your black amex and say “yeah i love the benifits and service they provide, would you agree?”
then they changed their mind and take the more expensive room, which you make a 10% commission on! handy card to have to piss people off about how EXCLUSIVE they are as a person - NOT!
Served a dude with a black plastic. I know they were both Tennis players on tour, from Europe somewhere… but sorry, don’t care for/follow tennis. They were assholes anyway, and pulled a “Euro tip”. I mean come on, if you tour around the world you really know better right…
Interesting statement in this video - black card holder - 10K max limit? WTF.

I have a question for all you fellow readers.
I’m looking at setting up an internet services business aimed at business and am looking at whether it is worth my while applying to accept AMEX.
My question is, when shopping for anything, do you select companies that advertise they accept amex over those that don#t even if the ones that dont work out cheaper?
I’m from the UK. I rang up Platinum services for a travel enquiry and was told that my spending patterns were good so would I like to be upgraded to the centurion card. They passed me through to centurion customer services who said they would contact me within 2 weeks. The next day I received a telephone call to say Amex UK has stopped new centurion accounts last year and weren’t likely to re-open until end of 2009 as a result of too many cardholders! Apparently they’ve added me to a list and will contact me in due course! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Hi,
Its a wonderful site for information on centurion card, especially lot of hype surrounds it.
Just have some couple of queries. Pls try to answer them
1) Does Amex organises their services in to categories ? if yes, pls let me know
2) How is the procedure once a request comes in? (structured procedure, selection?)
Appreciate your efforts.

HI, my parents have two of these black amex cards, it is true what they say u have reserve seating and access to luxury hotels, but if u have the money u don’t need the card these companies just aim their products to card holders. Plane tickets, and express customs and airport waiting is the best aspect of the card, when u travel overseas u get someone assist you thro the airport and u dont have to line up. Also 4 years added warranty/insurance is also an added feature. Any questions about the card or photos to prove i have 4 of them just ask
my parents both have the titanium centurion cards. however we definitely aren’t loaded and they sure as hell don’t brag about how exclusive they are. the comments they get when they use them in public are pretty funny though. people are always telling us how heavy they are. my mom just tells everyone it doubles as a ninja star.
the benefits of the card are fantastic. we can get reservations immediately to restaurants that normally would have had to be booked months in advanced, same with hotels. also with the black card you automatically get a free hotel room upgrade if there is a room available. my parent’s always just book a junior suite because we usually just get upgraded. one time we booked a junior suite and the next best available room was the presidential suite at this hotel we were staying at in Hawaii, so we got to stay in it but pay the price of a junior suite. good times.
In the new Bond flick, 007 flashes his black card at the airport where it is denied. They only show the back of the card which is clearly black with the signature strip in the right location. But… Its a FAKE. Real centurions do not have a blue box on the card as seen in the movie. Its a prop card…
not all that its cracked up to be. heres the daft thing i often go to a shop or restaurant where it says special offer for platinum card holders when i show the centurion they say no the offer is for platinum.
There travel service is crap, I asked for hotel or flights to be booked they come back with a cost that is considerably more than if I just logged in myself and book direct. They say ah yes but you get free champagne and a fruit bowl etc. Its not free when you take into the higher cost they charge, take today I just looked into a hotel AMEX cost 1700US a night, direct 1100US.
free travel insurance? wife lost her bags when I checked the insurance not really covered because the tickets where purchased by her firm.
Titanium cards are not automatically issued they still are the normal black plastic.
Exclusive? I was in a supermarket the other day the two people in front of me paid using the centurion card!!
I remember one time when I tried to pay with my titanium card, they said they don’t accept centurion cards because they don’t fit in the scanner.
I used to be a American express card harder for 17 years. WHat are the requirements to obtain another Platinum Card?
I make about $300K a year, what is the credit score required to receive another card?
I applied for a Black Card and I am anxiously awaiting its arrival.
How can I find out the stauts of my application.
Like any credit card - you must be 18 or older to apply for your own card.
Amex will let you have a supplemental card issued to the person of your choice, provided that the person is over 15. So they can have a card with their name on it, but under someone else’s account who pays the bills and receives all of the promotions.
Supplemental cardholders do not get any promotional vouchers, gifts, and other Centurion freebies.
So in answer to your question, if you are 18 or older, you can have any card you qualify for: green, gold, platinum or black.
If someone else you know has any card, and agrees to give you a supplemental card on their account - if you are 15 or older you can carry a card with your name on it.
Hi, How can I contact you directly? I’d like to use you as a source for an article I am writing.
Thanks.
I love your website! Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on having achieved the Centurion status. If you don’t mind my asking, how did you meet the spending requirement? I am a Platinum card member and eagerly wish to achieve Centurion status myself (though it will probably be several years down the road). Thanks!
Josh, the easiest way to do it is to pay your taxes with your card. Amex makes it easy to do through their website when your logged in.
Secondly, any big payment you make, ask if they take amex.
I pay my country club bills with the amex, tuition, travel etc.
It adds up a lot faster than you think.
@John:
Good point. I will be charging my last semester of tuition and definitely next year’s taxes on my card. Thanks for the suggestions!
hi
i have been a amex holder for several years from the blue, too gold and platinum charge cards and now platinum, though ive always payed on time believe iam a good customer im still waiting for a invite for a centurion…any ideas to move this along.
Man, once you have the centurion you will experience high class service, the only thing I don´t really like is when you pay people look at you like, wow, I´m gonna die, its a black card never seen one,so I tell them, I see it everyday and isn´t that big, of course you need to spend, spend spend plus prooving you have like 500,000 usd minimun in the bank, but really worth it, the travel services they have is really high class and at internet prices!!!!!!!!
I have a platinum card in perfect standing. The hefty monthly bill is always paid on time and I have been a member for 19 years. I have never received a reduction in my spending limit.
How do I “request” an invitation ?
Just wanted to share this… I put my deposit on a new condo at the W Hotel in Boston yesterday. As part of my offer I told them i would only purhase the unit if I could use my amex, they said ok. This purchase will put me well over the spending requirment for a black card. Does anyone think I will have a problem requesting a card after this?

WHO CARES? Life is short, make a change!
