i think that your blog about the card is pretty much amazing…
i am soon to be a cardholder and can’t wait to let you know if it is actually like you say it is.
I had a customer pay with a black Amex card years ago in a restaurant in Toronto. It would have been late 1985 or early 1986. It was made of plastic…definitely not titanium (at that time, anyway).
None of us had ever seen one before…but we knew it was “special” as we had all heard rumors about the “invitation only” card. Although we had a lot of celebs at the place, no one recognized him. Maybe he was just some rich guy…lol.
I have to admit…at the time it certainly seemed exclusive and impressive! Mind you, the tip must of been “standard”…otherwise I’d have remembered that TOO! LOLOL
i work at a ski resort, and indeed, they are common here! its funny to see how Black card holders react to inquires about their unusual card by employees who have never seen or heard of them before.
“oh! thats a cool card! its heavy! where did you get that?”
the woman just simply responded, “its metal.” and haughtly walked away.
the customers behind her, however, explained that it was THEE card… the infamed, unlimited American Express Black Card…
the employees face was priceless!!
I just have to say, this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen and that is pretty bad with all the things on the internet. Credit card worship of this magnitude can bring nothing good.
I would like to know the cost of the annual fee as well as the benefit of the black card before I apply.
I have held a BlackCard since inception as a charter member, but recently heard rumour of a Metal Black Card - has anyone heard of this or another rumour starting ??
Yes, Ian, the card that I have is made of a heavy titanium. Perhaps you might call and have yours changed out.
well yes i too hold a titanium centurion card, in fact two of them, the good thing is theres no chip and pin (which really Ps me off) oppose to the plastic. in fact american express informed me that when the card expires it has to be sent back to them to have it destroyed, however it certainly weights down the wallet.
i work at a fairly exclusive hotel and i would see at least 1 black amex per day. i love it when amex black members checkin, because you know they have plenty of cash, so you offer them an upsell to a better room so we can increase revenue. my favorite is when they dont take the upsell, so then you comment on the card - then they start telling you “its exclusive, they dont hand to many out”. but my real favorite is when you reach into your pocket, pull out your black amex and say “yeah i love the benifits and service they provide, would you agree?”
then they changed their mind and take the more expensive room, which you make a 10% commission on! handy card to have to piss people off about how EXCLUSIVE they are as a person - NOT!
Served a dude with a black plastic. I know they were both Tennis players on tour, from Europe somewhere… but sorry, don’t care for/follow tennis. They were assholes anyway, and pulled a “Euro tip”. I mean come on, if you tour around the world you really know better right…
Interesting statement in this video - black card holder - 10K max limit? WTF.

I have a question for all you fellow readers.
I’m looking at setting up an internet services business aimed at business and am looking at whether it is worth my while applying to accept AMEX.
My question is, when shopping for anything, do you select companies that advertise they accept amex over those that don#t even if the ones that dont work out cheaper?
I’m from the UK. I rang up Platinum services for a travel enquiry and was told that my spending patterns were good so would I like to be upgraded to the centurion card. They passed me through to centurion customer services who said they would contact me within 2 weeks. The next day I received a telephone call to say Amex UK has stopped new centurion accounts last year and weren’t likely to re-open until end of 2009 as a result of too many cardholders! Apparently they’ve added me to a list and will contact me in due course! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Hi,
Its a wonderful site for information on centurion card, especially lot of hype surrounds it.
Just have some couple of queries. Pls try to answer them
1) Does Amex organises their services in to categories ? if yes, pls let me know
2) How is the procedure once a request comes in? (structured procedure, selection?)
Appreciate your efforts.
- Sandy (Sandeep).
